What Magnets Do

Magnets are used in many in many different ways. They help make radios and televisions work. Electric motors, such as those found in vacuum cleaners and washing machines, contain magnets. Power stations use magnets to help make electricity. They could be put on doors such as refrigerators, to help them shut.

Compasses have magnets that help airplane pilots, ship captains and other drivers to find their way.

Another use of magnets are found in toys such as electric trains and magna doodles. Magnetized letters and shapes are used on chalk boards, white boards and refrigerators.
